Black cat stickers have been appearing on road signs across the UK — and beyond?
Nobody seems to know exactly where they came from, who's putting them there, or how many of the little things are out there.
Once you've spotted one, you'll start looking for them everywhere. On the school run. On a long drive. On that road you've travelled a hundred times before. Suddenly, every little black shape on a sign deserves a second look...
So, naturally, we decided they needed a map.
Map the Cat is a community hunt to photograph and document the cats that already exist, discover where they're hiding and see just how far they've travelled.

A few simple rules.
Keep it fun, fair and respectful.
Find them. Don't plant them.
Map the Cat is about finding the mysterious black cats that already exist. Never place, buy, make or attach a sticker in order to add it to the map. Putting stickers on property without permission may constitute vandalism or criminal damage.
One cat = one cat.
If a cat has already been mapped, that's still a valid sighting, but it won't count as another unique cat.
Photograph the actual cat.
Your photo should clearly show the sticker you've found. Screenshots, product photos and pictures of cats at home don't count.
Location matters.
Pin the place where the cat actually is — not necessarily where you are when you upload it.
Stay safe.
Never take photographs or use Map the Cat while driving. Stop somewhere safe or upload it later.
Be respectful.
Don't trespass or damage anything. Only photograph cats from places you're legally allowed to be, and don't remove, move or alter them.
Keep it friendly.
No inappropriate images, fake locations or spam. Play fair and keep the hunt fun for everyone. Submissions that break the rules may be removed, and repeated rule-breaking may result in your account being suspended or banned.

Map the Cat is a community project for recording sightings of the black cat stickers found on road signs. This policy explains what information we collect, why we use it and what may appear publicly.
Your email address stays private.Only your chosen display name can appear publicly. Approved sighting locations and photos may appear on the public map.
Information we collect
When you create or use an account, we may collect your email address, display name, sign-in and session information, submission history and moderation status. When you submit a sighting, we collect the photograph you provide, the location you select or share, the time of submission and information needed to review and manage that sighting.
How we use it
We use this information to operate Map the Cat, sign you in securely, review submissions, prevent spam or misuse, maintain the map, contact you about your submissions and keep the service safe.
What becomes public
If a sighting is approved, its cat location, approved photograph and relevant sighting information may be displayed publicly. Your chosen display name may also be shown. Your email address is not displayed publicly.
Photos and location data
Location is central to the project, so please only submit a location you are comfortable having displayed on the public map. Uploaded images are processed to reduce unnecessary embedded metadata before storage. Do not submit photographs containing personal information you do not want us to receive.
Moderation and safety
Uploads are held for safety and cat-sighting review before they can appear publicly. Submissions may be rejected, quarantined or removed where they do not meet the project rules or safety requirements. We may keep moderation records so decisions can be reviewed and abuse can be managed.
Service providers
We may use trusted service providers to host the website and data, deliver sign-in emails, provide map tiles and help protect or moderate the service. These providers may process information only as needed to provide those services. This policy will be updated if the services used by Map the Cat materially change.
Cookies and local storage
Map the Cat uses essential technology needed for account sign-in, sessions, security and core site functions. We will update our cookie information and, where required, ask for consent before introducing non-essential advertising or analytics technologies.
How long we keep information
We keep account and sighting information for as long as it is reasonably needed to run the project, maintain the integrity of the map, resolve moderation issues and meet legal or security requirements. Retention arrangements will be reviewed as the service develops.
Your choices and rights
You can contact us to ask about personal information associated with your account, request correction or deletion where applicable, or raise a privacy concern. Some information may need to be retained where there is a legitimate legal, security or moderation reason to do so.
